Loan target fixed for women SHGs

Coimbatore: District Collector P. Umanath has announced that Rs. 95 crore has been fixed as the target for extending loans to women self-help groups in the district during the fiscal 2010-2011.

Speaking at the district-level bankers’ meeting held at the Collector, Dr. Umanath said that last year, the financial assistance for women self-help groups was utilised well and extended his appreciation to the bankers for the performance. The Central Government has directed for extending banking services in villages that had a population of more than 2,000. Hence, bankers should gear up for the same before March 2011.

The Collector also instructed the bankers to speed up the processing of loan applications under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Scheme, THADCO, Urban and Rural Employment Schemes and for education loan disbursement.

Women SHG to run quarry

TIRUVANNAMALAI, India: Indira Gandhi Women Self Help Group from Vettavalam bagged a Blue metal quarry.

Government has decided to allot ordinary blue metal quarries in government poromboke lands in Tiruvannamalai district to Women Self Help Groups and associations formed by liberated bonded labours. Based on a notification given to this effect, Indira Gandhi SHG has bagged quarry license. They can quarry blue metals from 1 hectare land earmarked for them for 5 years. District collector M.Rajendran has presented the order on Tuesday. Deputy Director (mines) Thiyagarajan was present.

Legal camp evokes good response at Kovilur

PUDUKOTTAI, India: The legal aid-cum-legal literacy camp conducted recently at Kovilur village in Alangudi taluk in Pudukottai district evoked good response as a large number of villagers turned up and submitted grievance petitions seeking free legal assistance at the camp organised by the Alangudi Taluk Legal Services Committee in association with the non-government organisations (NGOs) and women self-help groups (SHGs) in connection with the Legal Aid Movement Day.

Assistance

R. Malathi, Judicial Magistrate and Chairman of Alangudi Taluk Legal Serices Committee, who presided over the camp and received many petitions from the public for free legal assistance, said that the legal aid movement was started on April 6 in 1977 in Tamil Nadu and on this day the erstwhile Tamil Nadu State Legal Aid and Advice Board was constituted with Justice P. Ramakrishnan as the first chairman and Justice N. Krishnaswamy Reddy as first vice-chairman.

Pioneer

She pointed out that the movement in Tamil Nadu was pioneer in the country functioning as a constituted body by the Tamil Nadu Government and registered under the Societies Act to provide legal assistance to the poor. She said the programmes of the erstwhile Legal Aid and Advice Board received wide attention and all these programmes were now adopted by the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority for effective implementation from November 9, 1977.

Equal justice

Mrs Malathi said that legal aid-cum-legal literacy camps were being conducted for observing the Legal Aid Movement Day as per the directions of the State Legal Services Authority and also for re-dedicating to the cause of brining out equal opportunities and equal justice through legal services.

S.P. Raja, advocate, R. Anbazhagan, Director of ‘Right,’ R. Neela, coordinator of Valarkalvi, K. Senthilraj, coordinator of ISED, Susila, secretary of Alangudi block-level women SHGs and others spoke about the various programmes of legal services committee and its activities.

‘SHGs ensure economic well-being of women'

Udhagamandalam, India: The Self-Help Group (SHG) movement has helped raise substantially the per capita income of women in the state, said the Khadi Board Minister K. Ramachandran while inaugurating the International Women’s Day celebrations organised by the Department of Social Welfare here on Wednesday.

The movement is playing a significant role in ensuring the economic well-being of the women, he said adding that in the Nilgiris alone 6,983 groups with 1,24,153 members were functioning. Their savings was over Rs. 40 crores.

Loan

A sum of Rs. 91.50 crores had been given to them as loan under various schemes.

With a separate department for development of women functioning in the state, Chief Minister Karunanidhi is fulfilling the dreams of the stalwarts of the Dravidian movement Periyar and Annadurai. The Chief Minister was a leading proponent of the Women’s Bill.

Survey

The Nilgiris Collector, Anandrao V.Patil, who presided over the function said that for speedy implementation of the Kalaignar Housing Scheme a survey of areas where huts are located, is in the process of being conducted. B. Gopalan and A.Soundarapandian, MLAs, and the Chairman, Udhagamandalam Municipal Council, R. Rajendran, spoke.

The District Social Welfare Officer in-charge, Sherin Philip, welcomed the gathering.

The Assistant Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Hannah Dixon, proposed a vote of thanks. Distribution of welfare assistance to the tune of rupees 4.33 crores to 256 self-help groups marked the occasion.
